Senior officials from the U.S. Department of Defense are reviewing a proposal to withdraw up to 10,000 troops from Europe.
According to NBC News, this move could raise concerns on both continents about potentially strengthening Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The troops under consideration for withdrawal are part of the 20,000 personnel that the Biden administration sent in 2022 to reinforce the defense of countries bordering Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion.
Internal discussions about reducing U.S. troop levels in Romania and Poland come at a time when President Donald Trump is attempting to persuade Putin to accept a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the United States will focus on securing its southern border and countering China.
