The commander of the US military base in Greenland has been removed from her position after sending an email expressing support for Greenland as part of Denmark, in direct contrast to President Donald Trump’s desire to annex the island.
The US Space Force announced today that Colonel Susan Myers was relieved of her duties as the commander of Thule Air Base in Greenland due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead.” The statement emphasized that commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of behavior, particularly regarding impartiality in their duties.
Greenland is a territory of Denmark, which is a NATO ally of the United States. However, President Trump has long shown interest in annexing Greenland, claiming it is a matter of US national security.
The incident escalated further after US Vice President Jay D. Vence visited Greenland at the end of March, sparking a heated exchange between the US and Denmark. During this visit, President Trump refused to rule out the use of military force for the annexation of Greenland, which led to diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
