Chairwoman of the “Guxo” party, Donika Gërvalla, has raised the possibility of new parliamentary elections in Kosovo following the failure of today’s constitutive session of the Assembly.
The session was interrupted after MPs failed to pass the first agenda item, which involved the approval of the report by the temporary commission on verifying mandates and quorum.
Speaking to Tëvë1, Gërvalla said her party would seek clarification from President Vjosa Osmani on the next steps, emphasizing that the situation could lead to either snap elections or the replacement of MPs who voted against the report.
“We might be heading toward new elections. We might also see the replacement of deputies who voted against. We will request the President’s interpretation and, depending on her sense of responsibility and competence, she might provide an answer,” Gërvalla stated.
When asked whether the request had already been submitted to Osmani, she replied:
“Even if it hasn’t been sent yet, it will be. That’s not in question.”
She added:
“Let’s send the letter first, and then wait for the President’s response.”
Gërvalla warned that repeating the failed vote is not foreseen in any of the Assembly’s legal or procedural documents, which complicates the situation even further.
“The work of this Assembly has been sabotaged before it even began. Now we are entering complex procedures, and the repetition of this vote is not regulated anywhere,” she said, suggesting that the constitutional path forward is unclear.
Following consultations with parliamentary parties, session chair Avni Dehari suspended the session and announced that the Assembly would formally address President Osmani for further guidance.
As of tonight, no formal letter has yet been submitted to the President.
Today’s failed session was supposed to see the deputies sworn in and vote on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the Assembly.
