Kosovo’s constitutive session of the Assembly will resume today at 15:00, with the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers topping the agenda.

During Saturday’s session, lawmakers completed the verification of mandates and took their oaths, but failed twice to elect Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker of Parliament due to a lack of majority votes.

VV’s Nominee Faces a Third Attempt

Despite the two failed votes, Albulena Haxhiu remains Vetëvendosje’s official nominee for the position. The left-wing party insists on exercising its constitutional right as the largest parliamentary group to nominate the candidate.

However, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) issued a media statement affirming it respects that right but will not necessarily support the candidate. “The clock has started for the formation of new institutions,” the statement noted.

Opposition Voices Call for Urgency

  • LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku highlighted that the lack of majority support has become evident after the mandate confirmation.
  • Fatmir Limaj, head of the Social Democratic Initiative (Nisma), stressed the urgent need to establish functional institutions, warning of political stagnation.
