The United States has expressed its willingness to open a communication channel with China regarding the high tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump.
A report published Thursday by a Chinese state-affiliated media outlet suggests this could be a step toward negotiations between the world’s two largest economies.
Reuters cited Yuyuan Tantian, a well-known source on Chinese social media platform Weibo, stating: “The U.S. has actively reached out to China through various channels, hoping to initiate talks on the tariff issue,” referencing anonymous sources.
The 145% tariffs that Trump has proposed on Chinese products have been described as a form of pressure that Beijing deems unacceptable. Chinese authorities have labeled these measures as “economic bullying,” stressing that they will not hinder the country’s economic growth.
Instead of trying to ease tensions, China has largely responded with strong public and international criticism of these trade restrictions.
Nevertheless, behind the scenes, Beijing has taken steps to mitigate the impact of the tariffs—drafting a list of U.S. products that will be excluded from the 125% reciprocal tariffs. These products include pharmaceuticals, microchips, and airplane engines.
