Kosovo’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Dimal Basha, met with North Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Aleksandar Nikoloski, in Skopje on Wednesday to discuss strengthening transport links between the two countries, including the strategic Prizren-Tetovë road and tunnel project.

According to Kosovo’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Prizren-Tetovë project was among the main issues discussed during the meeting, with both sides agreeing to intensify cooperation between their technical teams and accelerate the completion of the project design.

“The Prizren-Tetovë project is already underway, while our technical teams are cooperating on the project design. Today we agreed to intensify this cooperation, finalize the design as soon as possible, and then proceed with the procedures for contracting and implementation,” Basha said.

He described the project as being of major strategic importance, saying the planned tunnel would significantly shorten the distance between Prizren and Tetovë and create a new economic corridor between Kosovo and North Macedonia.

The two officials also discussed advancing other road and rail connections, including the Prishtina-Skopje motorway, the restoration of railway traffic between the two countries and the establishment of a joint border railway station under the “One Stop Shop” model.

Nikoloski said the construction of the Skopje-Blace motorway would provide an important transport connection between North Macedonia and Kosovo, contributing to faster and safer travel, stronger economic ties and greater cross-border cooperation.

He also highlighted the Tetovë-Prizren road project as an important infrastructure initiative aimed at further connecting the two countries and improving regional mobility.

“The project is underway, while the joint working group of the two countries will continue working on finalizing its design, after which intergovernmental agreements for its implementation will be signed,” Nikoloski said.

The planned Prizren-Tetovë connection is expected to strengthen road links between Kosovo and North Macedonia while creating a potentially important new route for trade, tourism and regional economic cooperation.
