Renate Schroeder, Director of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), has raised concern over the deteriorating state of press freedom in Kosovo, following the country’s drop of 24 places in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index.

Speaking on Info Magazine on Klan Kosova, Schroeder stated that the EFJ is closely monitoring the situation and that the outlook is troubling:

“Unfortunately, there are many red flags across Europe—Kosovo among them—where we see high risks,” she said.
“This is our daily work: to inform the Council of Europe about any concerning developments, and we hope international bodies like the EU or the Council of Europe will take our concerns seriously and put pressure on governments—though, sadly, with limited success.”

Schroeder emphasized that the situation has not improved over the past few years and remains stagnant due to geopolitical and political factors.

“Wherever journalists are, wherever they work—they must not be threatened for doing their job,” she stressed.

Her remarks underscore growing fears about media freedom in Kosovo and the need for stronger international accountability mechanisms.
