Albania’s Ambassador to North Macedonia, Denion Meidani, has commented on the 25th anniversary of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, stating that on August 13, 2001, North Macedonia chose an agreement over conflict and established a more modern and equitable constitutional order based on equality, fair representation, the official use of languages and decentralization.
Meidani emphasized that, 25 years later, the mission remains the full implementation of the agreement.
“The Albanian language, as provided by law, fair and adequate representation with genuine guarantees, and functional decentralization are obligations and standards upon which the peace of 2001 and the European future were built,” he wrote.

On August 13, 2001, North Macedonia chose an agreement over conflict and built a more modern and equitable constitutional order based on equality, fair representation, the official use of languages and decentralization.
The Ohrid Framework Agreement was the cornerstone of how the state would function going forward. It cemented a truth that cannot be relativized today: Albanians are a constituent part of North Macedonia, and their rights are an integral part of the state’s constitutional architecture. ⚖️
After 25 years, the mission remains ONE — simple and unwavering: implement the Agreement. Fully, every day, and without turning back!
The Albanian language, as provided by law, fair and adequate representation with genuine guarantees, and functional decentralization are obligations and standards upon which the peace of 2001 and North Macedonia’s European future were built.
Albania will always stand alongside the rights of Albanians and alongside a sovereign, democratic and European North Macedonia. These two positions are by no means contradictory. On the contrary, a state is stronger when its citizens are, and feel, included and equal.
