World leaders have reacted following the election of Pope Leo XIV, with U.S. President Donald Trump calling it a “great honor” to have an American pope, as reported by Rks News.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, called the election of the first pope from the U.S. “significant,” as reported by the BBC.
“The election of Pope Leo XIV is a deeply joyful moment for Catholics in the United Kingdom and around the world, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the leadership of the Church and for the world,” Starmer said.
He added that the papacy of Pope Francis highlighted the “special role” that the Holy See must play in uniting people to address issues such as climate change, poverty reduction, and promoting peace and justice.
“I look forward to meeting the Holy Father and continuing to work closely with the Catholic Church here in the United Kingdom and internationally to advance our shared values and the common good,” Starmer concluded.
