The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) announced it will submit a formal request today to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, challenging recent decisions made by the Assembly of Kosovo.
According to a media statement, AAK representatives will submit their request at 11:00 AM, asking the court to assess the constitutionality of the Assembly’s rejection of a secret ballot vote for the election of the Speaker of Parliament. The request also challenges “all similar decisions made in prior and subsequent sessions regarding the same issue.”
AAK, along with other opposition parties, opposes the proposal from Vetëvendosje (Self-Determination Movement) for a secret ballot to elect the parliamentary speaker. Vetëvendosje is in coalition with Guxo and Alternativa, but has not succeeded in securing the required 61 votes to elect their candidate, Albulena Haxhiu, as Speaker.
The constitution of the Assembly has stalled, and there have now been 14 failed attempts to elect a Speaker, due to lack of consensus.
In recent sessions, Avni Dehari, the acting chair from Vetëvendosje, insisted on conducting a secret ballot, but this approach has not received support from the opposition.
The next attempt to convene the Assembly is scheduled for May 13.
