The Special Prosecutor’s Office of Kosovo announced that on Wednesday morning, M.D., a Serbian citizen, was arrested on suspicion of war crimes committed against the civilian population during 1998-1999 in the municipality of Zveçan.

The arrest was carried out under the order of Special Prosecutor Florije Salihu-Shamolli, following a several-month investigation in cooperation with War Crimes investigators.

M.D. is suspected of being a commander of the Police Unit within the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) and is alleged to have been involved in killings, forced expulsions, looting, systematic torture, and beatings of Albanian civilians.

Specifically, he is linked to a military-police operation in April 1999 in the village of Zhazhë, where seven Albanian civilians were killed. Their bodies were later found in the cemeteries of the village Suhodoll in the municipality of Mitrovica.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that it will submit a request to the Basic Court of Prishtina to impose pre-trial detention on the suspect within the legal deadlines as per the Code of Criminal Procedure.
