The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has issued a statement following the meeting of all political leaders at the Presidency of Kosovo, a meeting that failed to produce any results toward resolving the institutional crisis.
LDK considers that Vetëvendosje is violating laws and the Constitution—stemming from its lack of a parliamentary majority even to elect the Speaker of the Assembly.
In this situation, the LDK believes that “the best path forward” is the formation of an inclusive transitional government, proposed to be short-lived until new elections are held.
LDK Statement:
Joint Political Declaration of the LDK Presidency and Parliamentary Group
Prishtina, May 15, 2025
Today, the President of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, participated in the meeting convened by the President of the Republic of Kosovo, in an effort to find a solution to overcome the country’s three-month-long political and institutional crisis. Without an Assembly, without a functional government, without direction—and as a result, without any answers to the citizens’ concerns.
The Democratic League of Kosovo sees it as a political, moral, and constitutional obligation to clearly present its vision and political stance to overcome the current crisis.
The crisis is a result of the first party’s inability to form a parliamentary majority, elect a Speaker, and constitute the Assembly.
Any attempt to functionalize institutions without such a majority is nothing more than an effort to arbitrarily impose partisan political will over political reality. Therefore, the stubborn and deliberate insistence to repeat the failed process of electing the Speaker for the sixteenth time offers no solution.
The Democratic League of Kosovo considers that the current situation cannot continue indefinitely. Any delay in institution-building, and each day with a caretaker government acting beyond constitutional competencies—potentially in serious violation of the law—is damaging to the public interest and severely undermines the constitutional order of the country.
To resolve the crisis, the Democratic League of Kosovo has proposed the creation of an inclusive transitional government, with a clearly defined mandate and responsibilities. The LDK Presidency considers that its proposal to overcome the crisis is the most suitable and serves the best interests of the country.
The Democratic League of Kosovo will continue to act responsibly and with prudence toward resolving the crisis.
The LDK calls on all political parties to support the idea of an inclusive transitional government as the best way to overcome the deep institutional crisis.
