NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that most U.S. allies support President Donald Trump’s proposal to raise defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Rutte made the remarks following Thursday’s meeting of NATO defense ministers held in Brussels.
“There is broad support,” Rutte told reporters. “We are very close, and I have full confidence we’ll get there by the next NATO summit,” which is set to take place in three weeks.
The push for higher defense budgets among NATO member states has gained momentum since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
