Russia launched around 500 drones toward Ukraine in what is being described as the largest drone attack since the beginning of the three-year war, according to Ukrainian air force reports. In addition to the 479 drones, 20 missiles of various types were also fired, mostly targeting central and western regions of Ukraine, reports Rks News.
Ukrainian forces stated that their air defense systems destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles during Sunday night’s assault, claiming that only 10 managed to hit their targets. One person was reported injured, although this information has not been independently verified, as reported by the Associated Press.
This escalation in aerial attacks comes in parallel with a renewed Russian offensive on Ukraine’s eastern and northeastern frontlines, stretching across a front approximately 1,000 kilometers long.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late Sunday that in some of those areas “the situation is very difficult.”
He did not provide further details. Ukraine is facing serious challenges on the frontlines against its largest adversary and continues to call for increased military support from its Western allies — particularly air defense systems.
However, uncertainty surrounding U.S. policy on the war has raised doubts about the extent of aid Kyiv can rely on. Nonetheless, Ukraine has carried out several stunning counterattacks.
Its most recent drone strike on remote Russian air bases was unprecedented in its scale and sophistication.
