The Presidency of Kosovo has confirmed that President Vjosa Osmani has been in contact with QUINT states and the European Union Office in Kosovo regarding the arrest of former Kosovo police officer Arbnor Spahiu by Serbia.
Bekim Kupina, an advisor to the President, told Reporteri.net that President Osmani’s engagement on the matter will continue. He noted that Osmani immediately contacted Kosovo’s Liaison Office in Serbia upon learning of the arrest.
“President Osmani, as soon as she was notified of the case, immediately contacted the Liaison Office of the Republic of Kosovo in Serbia and has also been in contact with the QUINT states and the EU Office. The President’s engagement will continue,” Kupina stated.
Wife’s Emotional Appeal for Support
The President’s statement follows a public plea from Spahiu’s wife, Arieta Spahiu, who called on President Osmani and other Kosovar institutions to react to her husband’s arrest. Serbia is accusing Arbnor Spahiu of “aggravated murder” in Banjska.
Arieta Spahiu emphasized that Arbnor “needs support more than ever,” yet she claimed that all institutions have remained silent until now.
“I publicly demand that you take a stand, speak out, and undertake concrete steps to address the case of my husband and others like him. Arbnori has contributed to Kosovo’s security for years. And today, when he needs support more than ever, he has been left in silence. No institution has reacted. Not the President, not the Assembly, not anyone else. And this silence is another pain for my family,” she expressed.
Speaking as a citizen, she added: “Because tomorrow this could happen to someone else. I demand from President Vjosa Osmani, from the Government, and from all institutions to react immediately. Arbnori must return home. He is not guilty – he is a silent hero of this country.”
Minister Sveçla Confirms MFA Engagement
Arbnor Spahiu has been placed under one-month detention. Asked about the case, acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is handling the matter.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is engaged in this,” Sveçla said, adding, “This citizen of the Republic of Kosovo should be released as soon as possible and such cases should not happen again.” He also confirmed that Spahiu was not part of the Kosovo Police in 2023.
