Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and one of the country’s top military leaders, has been killed in Israeli airstrikes, Iranian state television reported, according to Rks News.

Salami joined the IRGC in 1980 during the Iran-Iraq war and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure known for his fierce rhetoric against the United States and its allies. He played a major role in Iran’s nuclear and military programs, for which he had been under United Nations and U.S. sanctions since the 2000s.

In 2024, Salami was the head of the IRGC when Iran launched its first direct military assault on Israel, using over 300 drones and missiles.

In the days leading up to his death, Salami had warned that Iran was “fully prepared for any scenario or situation,” emphasizing the country’s military experience and condemning Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.
