The Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC) and the Kingdom of Belgium have officially signed the Agreement on the Enforcement of Sentences, enabling individuals convicted by the KSC to serve their prison sentences in Belgian prisons, in accordance with the court’s terms and Belgium’s approval, RKS News reports.

The news was announced through a statement from the Specialist Court, which described the agreement as a significant step toward building a functional and inclusive international criminal justice system. The President of the KSC, Ekaterina Trendafilova, expressed gratitude for Belgium’s continued support, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in fulfilling the court’s mandate.

“By signing this agreement, the Kingdom of Belgium reaffirms its commitment to international criminal justice and its support for the KSC,” said Trendafilova. She also called on other countries to follow Belgium’s example in strengthening the legal framework for enforcing sentences.

Meanwhile, the Head of Belgium’s Central Authority stated that this agreement is a demonstration of Belgium’s support for the full functioning of the KSC and its commitment to international justice.

The statement further notes that, in accordance with the 2014 Exchange of Letters between the EU and Kosovo and Article 162 of the Constitution of Kosovo, final sentences handed down by the KSC are executed outside the territory of Kosovo.
