Former Croatian President Stipe Mesić has commented on the potential military alliance between Kosovo, Croatia, and Albania. He stated that if one of the countries involved in such an alliance were to be attacked, it would be normal for the other two to react.

Historical Precedent and Regional Implications

Mesić drew a parallel to historical events, recalling the non-reaction of the world when the Russians occupied Czechoslovakia and Hungary for political reasons. He noted, “When the Russians reacted, when Yugoslav politics came into conflict with Soviet politics, the Soviets did not react on how to occupy Yugoslavia, and you know why? Because Tito was far-sighted here and he made an alliance with Greece and Turkey, which they called the ‘Balkan Pact’,” Mesić stated on Klan Kosova.

He elaborated on the Balkan Pact’s significance: “Since Turkey and Greece were NATO members, if one of these three states was affected, the other two had to react. Because the other two are members of the large Alliance, then that would be a major war in Europe. This way, Tito ensured that Yugoslavia passed without a major conflict with the Soviet Union.”

Kosovo’s Path and Serbian Politics

Mesić continued, “It would be normal for them to react, but no one will take such a risk, because the problem is not in Kosovo. Kosovo, sooner or later, will catch up with Europe, it is going its way, but in Serbia there are people who have not given up on Slobodan Milošević’s policy.”
