Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani today hosted Hisashi Owada, the former President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), for a meeting.
According to a statement from the Presidency, Osmani described it as a “special honor” to receive Professor Owada, emphasizing that he represents an “extraordinary figure in the field of international justice and a tireless promoter of global peace.”
Gratitude for Owada’s Role in Kosovo’s Independence Opinion
The President expressed the profound gratitude of Kosovo’s institutions and citizens for Professor Owada’s role. As President of the ICJ, he led the institution during one of the most crucial moments for the state of Kosovo: the issuance of the advisory opinion on July 22, 2010. In this opinion, the Court confirmed that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law.
“The President praised Professor Owada’s exceptional contribution not only to Kosovo but also to the development and advancement of international law and efforts for global peace,” the statement noted.
During the meeting, President Osmani also congratulated Professor Owada on receiving the “Doctor Honoris Causa” title from the University of Prishtina, stressing that “the institutions and citizens of the Republic of Kosovo will remain eternally grateful for his support and vision.”
