Cristiano Ronaldo has prioritized his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup potentially his sixth and record-breaking appearance over playing in the FIFA Club World Cup, currently taking place in the United States.
“I had some offers to play in the Club World Cup, but I didn’t see the point,” said Ronaldo in a video shared on Instagram by his Saudi club Al Nassr.
“I preferred to rest well and prepare properly because the season will be long. The World Cup will follow the season.”
The 40-year-old superstar recently extended his contract with Al Nassr for another two seasons and emphasized his commitment to both his club and Portugal’s national team.
“I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr but also for the national team,” he added.
Ronaldo recently helped Portugal win the Nations League, defeating Spain on penalties three weeks ago. Speculation had been building that he might join the Club World Cup tournament in the US, but Ronaldo has clearly set his sights on a historic World Cup run.
If he participates in 2026, Ronaldo—and his longtime rival Lionel Messi—could become the first players ever to appear in six World Cup tournaments.
The 2026 World Cup will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ronaldo already made history in Qatar 2022 by becoming the first player to score in five different World Cups.
Now with his Al Nassr contract extended, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing at least until age 42, underscoring his determination to remain competitive at the highest level.
