Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that relations between the United States and China are currently strong, saying both nations “understand each other,” despite past clashes over trade, security, and technology.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump described cooperation with China as “a very good thing” and in America’s best interest.
When host Maria Bartiromo pointed out previous points of conflict—cyberattacks, intellectual property theft, COVID-19, and fentanyl trafficking (for which the U.S. has blamed China)—Trump responded:
“Do you think we don’t act the same way toward them? We do. That’s how the world works. It’s a tough world.”
Addressing the 145% tariffs imposed in April on certain Chinese goods (now paused until August), Trump said:
“Everything in China stopped the moment we placed the tariffs.”
Meanwhile, Beijing announced a temporary trade deal with the U.S., involving phased easing of restrictions on Chinese products and a possible increase in exports.
Following the latest round of trade negotiations in Geneva in May, both countries agreed to pause the trade war, lower reciprocal tariffs, and reopen economic dialogue.
