The Union of Education, Science, and Culture of Kosovo (SBASHK) has warned that it may launch a general strike in September if the government fails to address the demands of education sector employees.
In its latest statement, SBASHK expressed sharp and reasoned criticism toward the party that won the February elections, accusing it of ignoring the citizens’ will by failing to establish functional institutions. The union claims the ruling party has been prioritizing political appointments over solving pressing issues that directly impact the lives of both public and private sector workers.
As a result, SBASHK says there is now an institutional vacuum in which education workers have no one to turn to with their demands.
In response, the union has intensified communication with local union leaders across the country—from preschools and primary schools to high schools and universities. A special congress will be convened to decide on further union actions, including whether the 2025–2026 school year will begin normally, or whether it will mark the start of a general strike across Kosovo’s education system.
“SBASHK remains fully committed to defending the rights and dignity of every education worker, and calls on the responsible institutions to act responsibly, open the door to dialogue, and provide concrete solutions for the demands of education workers.”
