A mysterious object named 3I/Atlas, believed to be a comet about 20 kilometers in diameter, has been observed approaching the Sun from another star system beyond our own, reports Rks News.
The discovery was made by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, which monitors potentially hazardous asteroids near Earth. The object is currently about 670 million kilometers from the Sun and is traveling at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per second.
Its highly unusual orbital path indicates it originates from an interstellar system, making it only the third known object of its kind—after ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and Comet Borisov in 2019.
While 3I/Atlas poses no threat to Earth, it will become visible to amateur telescopes in late 2025 and early 2026, though too faint to be seen with the naked eye.
