Azerbaijani authorities announced today that their natural gas will soon be exported to Syria via Turkey, a significant move aimed at alleviating Syria’s severe energy crisis. The announcement came during a visit by interim Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to Azerbaijan, where he met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Both nations confirmed that Syria is currently grappling with substantial energy problems. The project to export Azerbaijani gas through Turkish territory is expected to be implemented in the near future, contributing significantly to Syria’s energy security.

Syria’s new Islamist regime, which took power in December 2024 following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad, is focused on rebuilding a country devastated by nearly 14 years of civil war. The conflict has severely damaged Syria’s electrical infrastructure, leading to power outages that can sometimes last over 20 hours a day.

Earlier in May, Syrian Energy Minister Mohamed al-Bashir had stated that an agreement was reached between Damascus and Ankara regarding the supply of natural gas to Syria. Azerbaijan is a close ally of Turkey, which itself maintains strong ties with the Syrian transitional government.
