The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, has voiced serious concern over Kosovo’s ongoing institutional crisis, describing the situation as more severe than it appears publicly.
In an interview published Wednesday by Radio Gorazdevac, Ambassador Hargreaves emphasized that Kosovo’s current political deadlock is not just a legal or constitutional matter, but fundamentally a political issue that demands compromise among parties.
Constitution Alone Cannot Solve The Stalemate
“In my opinion, we are still waiting for the Constitutional Court’s decision, but in the end, this issue must be resolved through political compromise between the parties. This is essentially the core of the problem. The Constitution and laws provide the framework, but it is the responsibility of political parties to agree on the way forward,” Hargreaves stated.
The Ambassador’s remarks underline growing international concern that Kosovo’s deepening crisis could hamper governance and stall reforms needed for EU integration.
Upcoming Local Elections: An Opportunity For Inclusion
Speaking about the upcoming local elections expected this autumn, Hargreaves highlighted their importance as an opportunity for all communities—particularly the Serb community—to engage more fully in Kosovo’s institutional life.
He encouraged the Serb community to participate, describing this as a positive step towards greater integration and representation within Kosovo’s political system.
International Partners Call For Dialogue
The UK, along with other international partners, continues to call for constructive dialogue, urging political leaders to put aside partisan divisions for the sake of stability and democratic progress.
Observers warn that prolonged deadlock could delay critical reforms and weaken public trust in Kosovo’s institutions.
The message from the UK Ambassador is clear: Kosovo’s leaders must demonstrate political maturity by finding common ground through compromise, ensuring that constitutional processes are supported by genuine political dialogue.
