The Kremlin has downplayed US President Donald Trump’s order to deploy two nuclear submarines closer to Russia’s borders, stating that Moscow does not wish to be drawn into polemics over the issue.

In the first official reaction following Trump’s announcement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the American submarines were already on combat duty and dismissed suggestions that the move represented an escalation.

Very complex and sensitive issues are being discussed, which, of course, are perceived very emotionally,” said Peskov — although he added that everyone should be extremely cautious with nuclear rhetoric.

Trump’s move, made public a few days ago, has sparked various reactions on the international stage, while Moscow has chosen a more restrained tone in its response.
