Serb Arrested for War Crimes in Vushtrri Region

A Serbian national has been arrested at the Merdare border crossing on suspicion of committing war crimes against civilians in Kosovo.

According to the Special Prosecution Office and the Kosovo Police, the suspect, identified as Siniša Spasić, has been detained for 48 hours and is under investigation for crimes allegedly committed on April 6, 1999, in the municipality of Vushtrri, Mitrovica region.

Investigations indicate that Spasić served as an active reservist in the Serbian MUP (Ministry of Internal Affairs) during the conflict. His arrest was carried out by the War Crimes Investigation Directorate, in cooperation with the Special Prosecution.

Authorities are expected to request pre-trial detention before the Basic Court of Pristina.

Spasić was previously named in a criminal complaint filed on June 22, 2022, at the Special Prosecution, where he was listed among those suspected of involvement in the massacres against Albanians in Vushtrri.
