Erhard Buhler, former KFOR commander in Kosovo, shared his views on NATO’s role and the current security situation, as well as Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic future, in an exclusive interview with Kushtrim Sadiku on Kanal10.
Addressing statements about potential war threats, Buhler emphasized that he sees no immediate threat to Kosovo and does not foresee a war with Serbia.
“Well, it’s a difficult question, of course. But as I said earlier, I do not see an immediate threat to Kosovo. I do not see a war between Serbia and Kosovo in the future. Even if something were to happen, the citizens of Kosovo can rely on KFOR and its commitment. There is no need for discussion regarding Article 5,” Buhler stated.
He also highlighted the importance of sincere reconciliation and political responsibility from both sides, calling them essential conditions for lasting peace and Kosovo’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.
“I believe KFOR remains necessary until a final political solution is reached, which is the decision of NATO and the contributing nations of the force. Therefore, Kosovo and its citizens can rely on KFOR as long as there is no political resolution in the country. On the other hand, the security situation is not as bad as sometimes reported. You know what I mean, and Kosovo officials have said the same. KFOR is an operational force, and even if it currently has only 5,000 troops deployed, this does not mean KFOR lacks reserves elsewhere that could be deployed here if there were an external threat to Kosovo’s security. At the moment, I do not see any external threat at all,” Buhler added.
