German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has voiced support for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, stressing that a two-state solution is the only viable path to peace.
Speaking after his meeting with Indonesian counterpart Sugiono in Jakarta, Wadephul called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Both officials emphasized that the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is unbearable and requires urgent international action.
Indonesia and Germany Call for Peace
During a joint press conference, Sugiono highlighted their discussions on overcoming geopolitical challenges and growing trade barriers. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, strongly supports Palestine and does not recognize Israel. Germany, meanwhile, backs Israel’s right to defend itself but has urged it to minimize civilian suffering in Gaza.
“There is now a real opportunity to resolve the conflict, supported by neighboring countries. It would be in everyone’s interest if this political conflict could be settled peacefully,” Wadephul said.
Economic Ties Between Germany and Indonesia
The German minister’s remarks came during his five-day trip to Indonesia and Japan, which he described as crucial economic partners in building free trade and competitiveness.
Germany is Indonesia’s largest European trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $6.15 billion in 2024 and German investments exceeding $343 million. Ongoing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations are expected to conclude by 2026.
