Russia has raised concerns over escalating tensions in Kosovo and the broader Balkan region, warning that the situation could trigger a new conflict.

Zakharova Criticizes Kosovo Government

At a press conference, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Kosovo government of:

  • Repeated violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1244
  • Repression of the Serbian community
  • Illegally blocking Serbian participation in upcoming local elections, describing it as part of an “anti-Serb ethnic engineering” campaign

“The Kosovo issue must be resolved within the framework of international law, under the leadership of the UN Security Council. Without this, a fair and lasting solution is impossible, and the risk of conflict escalation is increasing,” Zakharova said.

Allegations Against Prime Minister Kurti

Zakharova also accused Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti of taking an aggressive stance toward the Serbian community. She claimed that Kurti interprets the European Union’s passivity as tacit support for his actions.

Additionally, Zakharova alleged that Kurti is deliberately obstructing the appointment of a Serbian representative as deputy speaker of the Kosovo parliament.
