President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of new tariffs on imported wood products and furniture, sparking concerns over potential increases in construction and home renovation costs.
Under the new measures, effective October 14, 2025, the United States will implement:
- 10% tariff on softwood lumber used in construction, including boards and beams.
- 25% tariff on wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets, and upholstered furniture.
Starting January 1, 2026, tariffs will increase further: 50% on cabinets and 30% on upholstered furniture, according to CNN.
Trump stated that the tariffs aim to protect U.S. manufacturers and strengthen national security, accusing countries such as Canada, China, and Vietnam of oversupplying the American market.
However, experts warn that the tariffs may drive up construction and furniture costs, at a time when housing prices are at record levels, and the domestic industry lacks the capacity to fully replace imports.
According to official data, furniture prices have risen by 4.7% over the past year, while living and dining room furniture has increased by more than 9%.
