Tragedy struck in East Java after the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school, leaving at least 3 people dead and 99 injured. Rescue teams are working urgently to save dozens of students and workers still trapped beneath the rubble.
According to local authorities, at least 38 people remain missing, most of them teenage boys. The collapse occurred on Monday evening while students had gathered for prayers inside the two-story building. Female students, who were located in another section, managed to escape unharmed.
Reports suggest the building had weak foundations and was not designed to support the two additional floors that had been illegally constructed.
Families of missing students have set up makeshift camps near the school, anxiously waiting for updates.
The school’s leader, KH Abdus Salam Mujib, apologized to the families, calling the tragedy “the will of God” and expressing hope that their losses would be met with divine reward.
Local officials confirmed that the school had not obtained the required construction permits, raising serious concerns about oversight of religious educational institutions in Indonesia.
Founded as a traditional Islamic boarding school, Al Khoziny focuses on Quranic and Islamic law studies, while also providing general education.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
