Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued a stark warning that Europe’s security is set to worsen and become more serious, following recent drone incursions into Danish airspace.
In interviews with Berlingske and the Financial Times, Frederiksen stressed that the incidents are “only the beginning” and called for Europe to discuss more deeply what this new security environment means for the continent and how to respond effectively.
Frederiksen compared today’s challenges to the interwar period of the 20th century, pointing to threats stemming from Russia’s “real war” in Ukraine and the broader hybrid warfare being waged against Europe.
“The idea of hybrid war is to threaten us, divide us, destabilize us. Use drones one day, cyberattacks the next, sabotage the third. This will not end simply by increasing our capabilities,” Frederiksen told the Financial Times.
Her remarks come as EU leaders meet in Copenhagen for an informal European Council summit, focused primarily on security and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to participate via video link. The summit will be followed by a broader European Political Community meeting on Thursday.
