The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has urged the German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, to support the removal of the measures imposed on Kosovo by the European Union since June 2023.

Following her meeting with Germany’s Foreign Minister, Osmani emphasized that lifting these measures is an urgent necessity.

“The immediate and swift removal of the EU’s unjust measures against Kosovo—measures in force since June 2023 that severely affect the daily lives of our citizens—is an absolute urgency, and we are hopeful for Germany’s support,” Osmani stated.

The President reaffirmed that Kosovo remains committed to good neighborly relations and to an equal and fair dialogue facilitated by the European Union.

“As long as Kosovo remains under measures imposed by the EU itself, the dialogue mediated by the EU cannot be considered balanced, principled, or equal,” she added.

Osmani also requested Germany’s support—which she described as a historic and allied partner—for Kosovo’s membership in the EU, NATO, and the Council of Europe, stressing that the country aims to join as a contributor, not a burden.

“Kosovo remains committed to its strategic orientation: membership in NATO, the EU, the Council of Europe, and every international organization that strengthens the global position of our country. As a state, we have always upheld the values on which these organizations are built and function. In all these international mechanisms, we aim to enter as contributors, not as a burden. In this journey, Kosovo needs Germany’s steadfast support. Therefore, the swift removal of the EU’s unjust measures against Kosovo—measures in place since June 2023 and which deeply affect our citizens—is an urgent necessity, and we are hopeful for Germany’s support,” Osmani declared.

She further stressed that the European Union remains incomplete without the accession of the Western Balkans, and expressed hope that Kosovo’s application for membership will be processed by the European Commission in order to pave the way for eventual accession.

“Your visit to Kosovo, as the next stop in your tour of the Western Balkans, is proof of your approach and that of the government led by Chancellor Merz—that the European Union remains incomplete without the accession of the Western Balkans. This strategic vision is of historic importance both for our region and for peace across the European continent. The Federal Republic of Germany has been and will remain a historic and traditional ally of the people of Kosovo. It has stood by us in the most difficult moments—in achieving freedom and independence, in reconstruction, state-building, and consolidation. Therefore, the people of Kosovo view Germany as their closest friend and most reliable ally in Europe,” President Osmani stated.
