Over 60 Albanians from the First Neighborhood in Gjakova were massacred by Serbian forces, between the night of April 1st and 2nd, 1999.

In the neighborhood, men, women, and children were shot and burned alive. The flames coming out of the Vejsa family’s house shocked the city’s residents. The bursts of automatic gunfire were relentless. The house burned along with the bodies of living and slain people.

Twenty individuals from the Vejsa, Hoxha, Haxhiavdija, Caka, Gashi, and Nuçi families, taking shelter in Lulzim’s house, ascended to the sky along with the flames that burned their bodies to bring the light of freedom. On the other hand, all four members of the Cana family and four from the Gërçari family were killed and burned along with their homes.

Similarly, on April 1st of the same year, in the early hours of the morning, military, police, and paramilitary formations surrounded the village of Ljubenic in Peja from all sides. This village, located at the foot of the Albanian Alps and between the villages of Raushiq and Strellc, saw many people killed.
