Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned on December 11 after weeks of protests against corruption.
Thousands of people had taken to the streets across Bulgaria to oppose the Government’s budget plans, eventually forcing the executive to withdraw them. Protesters later escalated their demands, calling for the resignation of the entire cabinet.
Zhelyazkov announced his resignation through a televised statement, just minutes before Parliament was scheduled to vote on a motion of no confidence against his government.
The Government’s collapse comes shortly before Bulgaria is set to join the eurozone on January 1, 2026.
