NATO announced that Croatia has entered a new era of air defense as of January 1, 2026, taking full responsibility for its airspace with modern Dassault Rafale fighter jets.

According to NATO, the Croatian Rafales will be fully integrated into the Alliance’s integrated air and missile defense system, strengthening both Croatia’s national capabilities and the collective defense of NATO.

The transition from MiG-21s to Rafales represents a significant technological and operational upgrade, providing modern sensors, full interoperability with allies, and direct integration into NATO command and control systems.

During the transition period, Italy and Hungary provided continuous airspace protection for Croatia, a move NATO described as a clear example of allied solidarity.

Croatian crews are now fully trained, and the Rafales are on 24/7 operational duty, enhancing both national security and NATO’s collective defense.
