The Democratic Party (DS) of Serbia has appealed to the European Commission, specifically the DG Connect department, and Meta Platforms regarding the “organized shutdown” of independent media accounts and individual profiles in Serbia, which reach large audiences of citizens.

In a statement, DS called for an urgent response from European institutions and Meta to prevent further misuse of digital platforms as tools of political repression.

“In an environment where the media space in Serbia is already drastically restricted, and where the government directly interferes in media operations, digital platforms remain one of the last channels of communication with citizens,” the party said.

DS emphasized that these digital channels are increasingly targeted by systematic attacks, which the party attributes to government action.

“The regime, aware of the importance of digital platforms, systematically works to shut down these communication channels using coordinated bot networks and platform abuse mechanisms,” the statement reads.

The party warned that such practices deepen cyber-repression against political dissenters and independent voices, and pose a serious threat to freedom of expression, political pluralism, and the democratic process.

This statement follows recent attacks on Instagram accounts of independent media, including the temporary suspension of Nova’s accounts and the permanent deletion of Radar.rs, highlighting the growing digital suppression of free media in Serbia.
