US President Donald Trump has openly expressed uncertainty over the future of his tariff policy, acknowledging that he does not know how the US Supreme Court will rule in a pending case challenging the legality of his actions.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump defended what he described as an “economic emergency”, the legal mechanism his administration used to impose the tariffs. The President argued that the law clearly supports his position, claiming the government has the authority to restrict trade through licensing requirements and that tariffs can be considered a “less severe” measure within that framework.

However, his tone shifted when referring to the judiciary.

“I don’t know what the Supreme Court will do,” Trump said, leaving open the possibility of a legal defeat.

Potential Consequences of an Adverse Ruling

Trump warned that a ruling against his administration could create serious complications.

“If we lose that case, it’s possible we’ll have to do our best to pay it back,” he stated, adding skeptically, “I don’t know how that would be done easily without hurting a lot of people.”

Greenland Card and Pressure on Europe

The use of emergency tariffs has become a key negotiating tool for the Trump administration. Beyond the legal challenge, the President also signaled a new front in trade tensions over the weekend.

Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries, linking the move to his broader geopolitical ambitions in the Arctic. According to the President, economic pressure could be used to push European states to support the idea of US ownership of Greenland.
