The United States is reportedly considering a complete withdrawal of its troops from Syria following the collapse of the YPG/SDF terrorist organization, as Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa moves to regain control of the country’s northeastern region, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Citing three US officials, the report notes that the “stunning events of the past week” have led the Pentagon to question the viability of the American military mission in Syria after the SDF’s defeat. Officials reportedly see “no reason” to maintain U.S. forces in Syria if the SDF disbands entirely.

Currently, the U.S. maintains approximately 1,500 troops in Syria, according to a Pentagon statement in July 2025.

When Trump returned to office in January 2025, he stated he would make a decision regarding U.S. troops in Syria. A Pentagon official declined to comment, saying, “We have nothing to offer on this matter and do not speculate on hypothetical situations or future operations.”
