Around 700,000 residents in the United States were left without electricity, and nearly 10,000 flights were canceled on Sunday, as a powerful winter storm threatens to paralyze the eastern states with heavy snowfall.
Meteorologists reported that snow, freezing rain, ice, and extremely low temperatures brought by the so-called “monster” storm will impact two-thirds of the eastern U.S., affecting approximately 180 million people.
Calling the storm “historic,” U.S. President Donald Trump declared a federal emergency in South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia, according to A2 CNN.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and remain in contact with all states along the path of this storm. Stay safe and warm,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have declared weather-related states of emergency, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed.
