European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, warned that Serbia’s recent adoption of judicial laws that limit the independence of the judiciary represents a serious step backward on the country’s path toward European Union membership.

Kos highlighted that while neighboring countries like Montenegro and Albania are making rapid progress in EU integration, Serbia risks moving in the opposite direction.

“At a time of significant progress in the enlargement process, Serbia risks going the wrong way. This is not what we want,” Kos wrote on her social media account X.

The Serbian National Assembly today passed amendments to the judicial system proposed by Uglješa Mrdić, a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), raising concerns among EU officials about the country’s commitment to judicial independence.
