Strengthening Albania’s Role in International Peacekeeping

The Albanian Armed Forces have expanded their international mission contributions by deploying an additional 30 troops to the European Union’s Operation ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A platoon from the Light Infantry Battalion of the Land Force marks Albania’s first full unit deployment to this mission, having previously contributed only staff officers.

A departure ceremony was held at the Zall-Herr garrison, attended by Defense Minister Pirro Vengu, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani, Turkish Ambassador Tayyar Kağan Atay, EU Charge d’Affaires Andre Rizzo, Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Arben Kingji, and Land Force Commander Major General Ilir Xhebexhia.

Albania’s Expanding International Military Presence

In his remarks, Minister Vengu emphasized Albania’s growing commitment to international missions, aligning with EU security policies as part of its integration efforts. He highlighted that the Albanian Armed Forces now have 500 personnel permanently deployed abroad.

“Men and women of our Armed Forces serve daily across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This contribution is not just about aligning 100% with EU foreign security policies—it is alignment through action. While some EU countries have withdrawn from this mission, Albania is taking on additional responsibility, proving that peace and stability in our troubled region come through hard-won compromises,” Vengu stated.

He also expressed gratitude to the Turkish government and military, under whose command the Albanian unit will serve:

“I deeply appreciate the commitment and support provided by the Republic of Turkey and its Armed Forces in these joint missions. This deployment reaffirms Albania’s capability to operate in stability and peacekeeping missions alongside allied forces. You will serve within a Turkish Armed Forces company, which will provide full logistical support,” he told the troops, expressing pride and respect for their dedication.

A Symbol of Regional and Global Commitment

Foreign Minister Igli Hasani described Albania’s participation in Operation ALTHEA as more than just a military duty:

“This mission is a clear testament to our unwavering commitment to regional and international security and stability. Our participation reflects the values we share with our partners—peace, cooperation, and collective security.”

Turkish Ambassador Atay highlighted the longstanding military cooperation between Albania and Turkey, including past joint service in Afghanistan. He welcomed this new mission as a significant step in deepening bilateral defense collaboration.

Meanwhile, EU Charge d’Affaires Andre Rizzo praised Albania’s full alignment with EU foreign and security policies, recognizing the country as a key partner in global security efforts.

The first Albanian contingent in Operation ALTHEA consists of 30 troops, including one female soldier, and will serve for approximately six months at Camp Butmir in Sarajevo.
