A Russian missile strike hit a residential building in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, killing 11 people, including two children, Ukrainian officials reported on Monday.
Eighty-nine people, including 11 children, were injured in the attack late on Sunday night, according to Ukraine’s state emergency service.
The attack on Sumy followed relentless Russian bombings of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Sunday morning.
Kyiv said that Russia used 120 missiles and 90 drones in these attacks, resulting in the deaths of seven people.
“Sunday evening turned into hell for the city of Sumy, a tragedy that Russia brought to our land,” said Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the Sumy military administration.
The Sumy military administration said another missile strike hit the city’s energy network, leaving Sumy without power.
Ukraine’s Air Force stated that Russian forces used Iskander-M missiles and a Kh-59 guided missile during the nighttime attack.
More than 400 people were evacuated from the city, according to the emergency service.
Photos posted on Telegram by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service showed firefighters battling fires and rescuers carrying people out of the building.
The Sumy regional prosecutor’s office said that 90 homes, 28 vehicles, two educational institutions, and 13 buildings were damaged in the attack.
