Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has called on citizens to join further protests, accusing the Albanian government of using excessive force against demonstrators during Monday’s protest outside the Parliament.
In a statement to the media, Berisha condemned what he described as the mistreatment of protesters, alleging that women with children and individuals who were not directly involved in organizing the demonstration were also affected.
“I strongly condemn the violence used against the protesters. Citizens are facing repression simply for expressing their dissatisfaction,” Berisha said.
The opposition leader blamed the government for what he described as politically motivated actions against demonstrators, arguing that the protests reflect growing public dissatisfaction with the country’s current political situation.
Berisha urged Democratic Party supporters and other citizens to continue participating in demonstrations, saying the protests are aimed at defending citizens’ interests and bringing political change in Albania.
Albanian authorities had not issued a comprehensive response to Berisha’s allegations regarding the handling of the protest at the time of publication.
