China condemns the US decision to increase military aid and weapons sales to Taiwan, warning that Washington is “playing with fire” and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
China has sharply criticized the United States’ decision to bolster military aid and weapons sales to Taiwan, accusing Washington of “playing with fire” and intensifying tensions in the Taiwan Strait, reports RFE.
On Saturday, President Joe Biden authorized the supply of approximately $571 million in defense materials, services, and military training to Taiwan. This move came just days after the US Department of Defense approved a $295 million arms sale to the island.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded with a stern warning, urging the United States to stop arming Taiwan and end what it called “dangerous moves” that threaten peace and stability in the region.
Taiwan, a democratic island with a population of 23 million, has been self-governing since 1949, following the Chinese Civil War. However, the Chinese government considers Taiwan part of its territory and has vowed to bring it under its control, even by force if necessary.
The US has been a steadfast supporter of Taiwan, providing military aid and arms to help deter any potential Chinese aggression. The recent arms sale includes $265 million for around 300 tactical radios and $30 million for 16 launchers, further solidifying Washington’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the support, calling it a reaffirmation of the US’s dedication to Taiwan’s protection.
The move highlights the ongoing geopolitical friction between China and the United States, as tensions over Taiwan’s status continue to rise, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
