U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the United States would respond to any Iranian attack on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz by targeting key infrastructure inside Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“From this point forward, every time the Islamic Republic of Iran fires upon a ship in the Strait of Hormuz—whether by missile, shell, drone, or any other weapon—the United States will bomb and destroy A BRIDGE OR A POWER PLANT, including those located near or within the capital, Tehran.”
The statement marks a significant escalation in Trump’s rhetoric amid ongoing tensions with Iran over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes.
According to CNN, Trump has previously threatened to target Iranian infrastructure. In an interview with Fox News last week, he said the United States would “destroy all of Iran’s bridges” if Tehran refused to negotiate.
Legal experts note that intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure may violate international humanitarian law, depending on the specific circumstances and whether the facilities qualify as legitimate military objectives. Deliberate attacks on purely civilian objects can constitute war crimes under international law.
