Following Russia’s confirmation that it launched an experimental hypersonic ballistic missile into Ukraine, China issued a call for calm and restraint from all parties involved in the conflict. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated Beijing’s position during a regular briefing, urging all sides to engage in dialogue and consultation to de-escalate the situation and create conditions for a ceasefire.

The statement comes after Russia’s missile attack on Dnipro in Ukraine, which was seen as a significant escalation of the war. The attack has drawn sharp responses, with Ukraine condemning the strike as an act of brutal escalation by its “mad neighbor,” while the United States blamed Moscow for escalating the conflict at every turn.

China’s Neutral Stance and Its Call for De-escalation

In line with its longstanding position, China has maintained that the conflict in Ukraine should be resolved politically and without further escalation. Despite being a close political and economic ally of Russia, China claims to maintain a neutral stance, refraining from providing lethal aid to either side in the conflict. This sets it apart from countries like the U.S., which has provided extensive military aid to Ukraine.

China’s response to the missile launch reflects its broader approach to the Ukraine crisis, which has been one of calling for diplomatic solutions while avoiding direct involvement. Lin Jian emphasized that China believes all parties should remain calm and seek a resolution that avoids exacerbating the situation.

Upcoming NATO-Ukraine Talks in Brussels

In light of the heightened tensions, Ukraine and NATO will hold a meeting on Tuesday in Brussels to discuss the ramifications of the recent hypersonic missile launch. This meeting will focus on the growing threats posed by Russia and how the alliance can further support Ukraine amid increasing military escalation.
