CNN reports that Ukraine is testing a new type of drone in Russian positions in Ukraine, dubbed the “dragon drone.” These drones are unleashing fire in its fight against Russian invaders, giving a modern twist to a munition that had a devastating effect in both World Wars.

A series of videos posted on social media and by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on Wednesday show low-flying drones dropping molten metal rain on Russian-held positions among rows of trees.

The white-hot mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide, known as thermite, burns at temperatures up to 4000 degrees Fahrenheit (2200 degrees Celsius). It can quickly incinerate trees and vegetation.

As it falls from the drone, thermite resembles the fire spewing from a mythical dragon’s mouth, hence the drones’ nickname.

Thermite can easily burn through nearly anything, including metal, so there is little defense against it.

It was discovered by a German chemist in the 1890s and was initially used to weld railway tracks.

But its military power soon became apparent in World War I, and World War II, used by Germany and its allies.
