Democrats are projected to take control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress following the November 3 midterm elections, according to CNN projections, in a major shift that could complicate President Donald Trump’s efforts to advance his political agenda.
In the Senate, Democrats have secured 53 seats compared with 39 for Republicans, according to the figures reported. The results indicate that Democrats have gained six seats previously held by Republicans.
A total of 34 Democratic seats and 31 Republican seats were not contested in this election cycle.
Democrats are also on track to regain control of the House of Representatives. At the time the results were reported, they had secured 197 seats, compared with 114 for Republicans.
Democrats have gained 10 seats from Republicans so far. A party needs at least 218 of the House’s 435 seats to secure a majority.
Control of both chambers would give Democrats greater influence over legislation and congressional oversight of the Trump administration, potentially making it more difficult for the president to advance his policy priorities.
Trump responds with VETO message and criticism of Fox News
Following the projected Democratic gains, Trump published a series of reactions on his social media platform, Truth Social.
He suggested that he would provide a more detailed assessment of the election results in the coming days, saying he would become a political commentator and discuss the reasons why candidates had won or lost.
The president also shared a photograph of a red cap bearing the word “VETO” in large white letters, designed in a style similar to the MAGA caps associated with his political movement.
Trump had previously warned that he would “veto everything” if Democrats regained control of Congress.
In another post, he sharply criticized Fox News for inviting former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio onto one of its programs.
“Why does Fox News invite Bill de Blasio, the worst mayor in the history of New York City, onto its program to talk nonsense like a lunatic?” Trump wrote.
He claimed that de Blasio had left office in disgrace and had caused immeasurable damage to the city.
“The city has never been the same since, and now he is telling us how to govern America,” the president added.
Trump also blamed Fox News for Republican losses, accusing the network of repeatedly giving airtime to Democratic opponents.
“Fox News is responsible for these losses because it constantly and repeatedly gives a platform to Democratic opponents, and even worse than that,” he wrote.
The projected results could reshape the relationship between the White House and Congress, giving Democrats greater power to influence legislation and scrutinize the administration during the remainder of Trump’s term.
